Iron Removal/Softener System
Napier-Reid Rolling River Water Treatment Plant (WTP) provides drinking water for Rolling River First Nation residents in Manitoba.

Background
Rolling River First Nation residents welcome a new WTP in 2008 to treat well water with high hardness, high iron, manganese and organic content.

The Treatment Process
Napier-Reid provided a water filter and softener system designed for a feed rate of 936 m3/day and a permeate rate of 70% after nanofiltration to produce 648 m3 drinking water without the use of coagulating agents.

The package plant is composed of three common MD-80 pressure filters using MD-80 catalytic media for the removal of iron and manganese. Potassium permanganate is injected into the influent as a means of continuously regenerating the MD-80 media. It also reacts with organics for their removal in the MD-80 media. Typically these filters are each backwashed once per day.

The water flow is then split into two membrane filter units. Cartridge filters with pore size of 1 micron are the first stage followed by membrane nanofiltration for removal of hardness as CaCO3.

Napier-Reid provided chemical systems including potassium permanganate, chlorine, and chemical systems for cleaning the membranes. We also supplied instrumentation for measuring the quality of the water and PLC to control all the functions of the water plant.

Operations
The system has produced water exceeding the specified effluent criteria working for one year without any problem identified. Clean-in-place (CIP) is performed once per 6 months.
