Gravity WTP supplied for Attawapiskat First Nation
Napier-Reid supplied a gravity filter water treatment plant (WTP) for Attawapiskat First Nation, Ontario, Canada.

The community is located approximately 200 km north of Moosonee on the west shore of James Bay. In 1999, it was proposed to replace the existing treatment plant with a new one capable of providing good quality drinking water for the 20 year design flow of 2,592m3/day.

The Treatment Process
Napier-Reid provided a gravity filter WTP that consists of two separate filter trains, each comprised of: one rapid mixer, one flocculator, one clarifier, and one filter cell, while instruments, blowers and control panels are common. The system was factory assembled.

The incoming flow enters the rapid mixing zone for coagulation of Alum, and then goes into the flocculation chamber to form the floc bonding. When the water leaves the flocculation chamber, it goes to the clarifier chamber for flocs to settle by gravity to the bottom of the clarifier. A collection system on the surface collects and directs the clarified water to the filter cell, where remaining solid particles are removed. The filter media is anthracite and silica sand. The water passes through the layers of the media and is collected by the under drain system. This filtered water is then sent for use.
