Pressure Filters in Thamesford WTP
Napier-Reid provided a pressure filtration system for a water treatment plant (WTP) to remove iron and manganese in the drinking water for the community of Thamesford, Ontario, Canada.

Background
The community of Thamesford approached Earth Tech Canada Ltd., to design a WTP in 2004 with maximum capacity of 3,673m3/day and average capacity of 1,224m3/day using underground well water.

The Treatment Process
Napier-Reid was chosen to provide the pressure filtration system for Thamesford WTP. The facility has total of three filter trains (two base and one provisional), each consists of an epoxy-coated carbon steel pressure vessel for a design working pressure of 860 kPa, filter media composed of gravel, media MD-80 (for iron and manganese removal) and anthracite, process control valves, instruments and sensors, an air scour blower assembly and a PLC control panel.

The raw water flow is chlorinated to oxidize the soluble iron and manganese. The water then flows through the filter bed of anthracite and MD-80 where the impurities are captured.

Operations
Thamesford is one of several water treatment systems for iron and manganese removal manufactured by Napier-Reid that have been installed in Oxford County. All of these plants are successfully operating, providing water that complies with the Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act standards for iron and manganese removal.
